Go Time!

So... Sara was planning on staying like this

for a while. But our baby boy had other ideas...

About 3 o'clock in the morning on September 2, Sara's water spontaneously burst (she swears she didn't wet the bed). We rushed to the hospital--obviously very concerned about the baby boy that wasn't supposed to be arriving for another couple of months--and Sara's contractions were going strong by the time we arrived at the hospital.

Since Sara's water had already broken, we knew we wouldn't be leaving the hospital until the baby was born. It was at this time that we decided we might want to pick out a name... Kaleb Scott has a nice ring, doesn't it? Kaleb to remind us to always put our faith in and trust God, especially when the unexpected comes our way (the tie-in with Joshua is just icing); and Scott to honor our fathers, both of whom now share their middle name with Kaleb.

The big concern with going into labor this earlier was that Kaleb would have trouble breathing on his own because his little lungs would not be fully developed at this stage of gestation (32.5 weeks). Luckily for us, the amazing people at Woman's Hospital took great care of us. They were able to weaken and then hold off Sara's contractions just long enough (really, JUST long enough) to allow a steroid to hasten the development of Kaleb's lungs. And by late Tuesday night/early Wednesday morning, it was pretty obvious Kaleb was done waiting and was coming no matter what we did to hold him off.

At about 2 o'clock Wednesday morning (yes, that would be 23 hours after Sara's water broke), they cut off the medication that was holding the contractions at bay, and things progressed... quickly.

Just a couple of hours later we were well on our way to welcome our beautiful little (seriously, he's not big) miracle into this world.
